Adult Neuropsychological Testing in Oswego, Illinois

A comprehensive look at how different pieces of functioning fit together.

Neuropsychological testing is used to better understand cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and social functioning. Rather than looking at one symptom or test score in isolation, an evaluation brings together information from multiple areas to develop a more complete picture.

Some people come to testing with a specific question about ADHD, autism, or a learning difference. Others have spent years noticing difficulties with attention, memory, organization, mood, or everyday functioning without being sure what is behind them.

Both are reasonable reasons to seek an evaluation.

Testing may help clarify questions related to:

  • ADHD and executive functioning

  • Autism spectrum disorder

  • Learning differences, including dyslexia

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Memory, processing, and other areas of cognitive functioning

Sometimes the results confirm what you already suspected. Sometimes they point toward a different explanation. The purpose of the evaluation is not to force your experiences into a particular diagnosis- it’s to gather enough information to understand them more accurately.

Neuropsychological testing is available for adults ages 18+.

What Happens During a Neuropsychological Evaluation?

Testing is comprehensive, but the process itself is fairly straightforward.

We begin with a 30–60 minute telehealth intake to talk about your history, current concerns, and what you’re hoping to understand. Testing is then completed in person, typically across two appointments lasting approximately two to three hours each.

Once the evaluation is complete, we’ll meet again by telehealth for a 30–60 minute feedback appointment.

This part matters. You’ll have an opportunity to understand your results, ask questions, and talk through recommendations rather than simply receiving a report and being left to interpret it yourself.

The goal is for the information we gather to be useful beyond the testing room.

ADHD Testing for Adults in Oswego, IL

ADHD can affect much more than the ability to pay attention.

Adults may notice longstanding difficulties with organization, time management, working memory, completing tasks, impulsivity, or keeping up with everyday responsibilities. At the same time, anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep, and other factors can sometimes create similar difficulties.

A comprehensive ADHD evaluation allows us to look at those possibilities together.

The question isn’t simply, “Do you have ADHD?” It’s also, “What best explains the patterns you’re experiencing?”

That distinction helps us arrive at recommendations that are actually connected to what we find.

Adult Autism Evaluations in Oswego, Illinois

Some adults begin wondering about autism after recognizing patterns that have been present for much of their lives. Others begin considering an evaluation after a therapist, physician, partner, family member, or someone else raises the possibility.

An autism evaluation can explore areas including social communication, sensory experiences, behavioral patterns, relationships, and other characteristics associated with autism spectrum disorder.

We also consider the broader context of your experiences rather than approaching the evaluation with the assumption that there is already a particular answer.

For many adults, having a clearer understanding of longstanding patterns can provide useful context for experiences that previously felt difficult to explain.

Learning Disability & Cognitive Testing in Oswego, IL

Difficulties with learning or processing information don’t always end when school does.

Neuropsychological testing can examine areas such as reading, writing, memory, processing, attention, and other cognitive skills to better understand strengths and areas of difficulty.

For adults who have struggled academically or wondered whether a learning difference was missed earlier in life, an evaluation can help clarify whether a condition such as dyslexia or another learning disorder may be contributing.

It can also help distinguish between difficulties related to learning and those associated with attention, emotional health, or other areas of functioning.

Brain Mapping in Oswego, Illinois

Another way to look at patterns of brain activity.

Brain mapping uses sensors placed on the scalp to measure electrical activity in the brain. The resulting maps can show patterns of relative activity across different areas and provide additional information about how the brain is functioning.

This information may be considered in relation to concerns such as attention, anxiety, depression, and other symptoms.

Brain mapping is different from neuropsychological testing. It does not replace a comprehensive psychological evaluation or provide the same type of diagnostic information. Instead, it offers another way of examining patterns of brain activity and may also help inform areas targeted during neurofeedback.

Brain mapping is available for ages 13+.

Neurofeedback in Aurora, Illinois

Using real-time feedback to train patterns of brain activity.

Neurofeedback is a form of brain training that uses real-time information about brain activity during a session.

You might watch a show or movie, play a game, or listen to a podcast or music. As brain activity changes, the system responds through what you see or hear. Over time, this feedback is used to train targeted patterns of activity.

Sessions generally last approximately 20–30 minutes and are commonly completed twice per week.

Neurofeedback may be used to address patterns associated with concerns such as attention, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and other areas of functioning.

Neurofeedback is available for ages 13+ through KM Institute in Aurora, Illinois.

Neuropsychological Testing vs. Brain Mapping vs. Neurofeedback

It’s completely reasonable not to know the difference between these services when you first arrive here.

Neuropsychological testing is an assessment process used to understand cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and social functioning and may help clarify a diagnosis.

Brain mapping measures patterns of electrical brain activity and provides a different type of information about how the brain is functioning.

Neurofeedback is a training process that uses real-time feedback to work with targeted patterns of brain activity.

They serve different purposes, and one is not automatically better or more appropriate than another. What makes sense depends on what you’re experiencing and what you’re hoping to understand.

Insurance for Neuropsychological Testing

Harmony Neuropsychology currently accepts Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, and UnitedHealthcare, as well as private pay.
